 SKILLED NEWCOMERS IN CONSTRUCTION-2021INFORMATION SESSION:

Lions Bingo Hall-Upstairs (46 Valley Street) January 12th 9:00 am - 10:00 am

ELIGIBILITY: SKILLED NEWCOMERS WITH A RROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND IN CONSTRUCTION WHO ARE SEEKING TO EARN THEIR CANADIAN CREDENTIALS, OR NEWCOMERS WITH EXPERIENCE IN CONSTRUCTION TRADES WHO ARE SEEKIING TO SUCCESSFULLY TRANSITION INTO A CAREER IN THE ISLAND CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY. Newcomers must have been living in Canada for less than 10 years, who is a Canadian Citizen, or a permanent resident or a refugee with a valid work permit and have a Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test of 8 or higher

This session will explain how the program works.  After the session, if you are interested, program staff will book you in for an interview. For your interview, please bring a resume, & your social insurance Number

The Program staff will interview all candidates and select 12 candidates for the program.  All persons interviewed but not selected will be called to let them know they were not selected

LOCATION: Lions Bingo Hall Upstairs (46 Valley Street-Charlottetown)

CLASSROOM TIME: JANUARY 25-MARCH 19- 2021 (classroom component is an unpaid learning experience)

CLASSROOM HOURS:  8:00 am to 3:00 pm (arrive @ 7:45am…one hour for lunch)

PAID WORK EXPERIENCE: MARCH 22-MAY 14, 2021(8 weeks paid by your employer)

 CLASSROOM TOPICS: 

·         INTRODUCATION TO PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATIONS: ENGINEERS PEI, ARCHITECT ASSOC.  CAPEI

·         SPEND A DAY WITH A PROJECT MANAGER TO REVIEW blueprint, building codes tendering process.

·         REVIEW OF TRADES TOOLS, MATERIALS, SUPPLIES FOR VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION TRADES

·         PRESENTATIONS BY TRADE EMPLOYERS & WORK SITE VISITS, lead by a project manager or foreman.

·         CERTIFICATION IN FALL PROTECTION, CSTS, WORKSITE SAFETY ORIENTATION CPR/FIRST AID/WHMIS

·         EXPERIENCE VARIOUS TRADES THROUGH VIRTUAL REALITY

·         CERTIFICATION IN NATIONAL BUILDING CODES (one day per week)

·         ORIENTATION DAY: SPEND A DAY WITH AN EMPLOYER

·         REVIEW OF OUR ISLAND WORK CULTURE for construction trades/Professions

·         REVIEW OF GOLD SEAL CERTIFICATION

·         ORIENTATION TO CORE TRADES:  carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry- roofing-hands on projects

·         APPRENTICESHIP PROCESS FOR RED SEAL CERTIFICATION IN CANADA 

·         ISLAND BUILDER WEBSITE -CONNECTING YOU TO CAPEI MEMBERS AND CONSTRUCTION JOBS

·         RESUME DEVELOPMENT, INTERVIEW SKILLS, HIDDEN JOB MARKET·         GOAL SETTING:  Canadian Credential Process

·         PROBLEM SOLVING EXERCISES, TEAM BUILDING, COMMUNICATION SKILLS, TRADES MATH

·        FREE WORK BOOTS, & PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
